How to Find “Yourself” in 8mins and 35 Seconds

We live in a world of Information Overload.

We are bombarded with vast amounts of information on a moment to moment basis.

In order to make sense of it all the brain creates the brain constructs a story called reality; it’s been doing so for quite since you were just a little person.

But, it’s all subjective; this thing called reality.

We have such very limited perspective; yet, when it comes to “knowing” the outcome of events most of us act like we can see into the future.

This “skill” is both harmful and hurtful to us. Our “knowing” either compels us to take action or freezes us in our tracks.

Here is an example of what I mean.

One woman I coach has a dream to be an actress. We work on building a sense of presence through the practice of stillness and a few other exercises I’ve shared with her.

She “holds her space” like few people can. But, every time she sets the intention to book an acting gig crazy things pop up and she redirects her energy and focus. I’ve seen this happen with a lot of people; myself included.

Does that happen with you?

It’s like the moment you say to yourself “I’m going on a diet tomorrow”; you wake up go to work and someone brought donuts!

Another way it occurs is all in your head.

You set an intention and a script starts running in your mind giving your 1001 reasons why this won’t work.

Every pitfall, every obstacle and every inch of the 10,000 mile journey ahead becomes glaringly clear.

Cue Procrastination; time to avoid making a change, Update Facebook instead.

Go Ahead....Update Facebook Now....Tell your friends they can get a free copy of my book too!  ;)

I realized that for me, getting side tracked is a result of the story my brain tells me.

Sometimes the story is distracting; it triggers me into a sense of overwhelm. Other times the story motivates me.

But, one thing is for sure the story labeled “Me” greatly influences the conditions of my life.

Recently I realized I need to just forget it all.

I do my best daily to induce amnesia. I want to forget the past and the future. I want to just BE.

So here’s what I do.

Sit, eyes closed and breathe in. Contemplate stillness and repeat the words “Let Go”; breathe out.

After a few minutes focus the awareness into that space just behind the eyebrows. Breathe in and imagine looking into a black hole of  NOTHINGNESS.

Breathe in….Nothing.

Breathe out….Nothing.

Say; I am….Nothing.

Sit there in Nothingness for as long as it takes me to feel empty.

At first it was kind of scary. It felt uneasy and I didn’t stay there too long. But, after a few sessions I began to extend my “sitting” time.

However long it takes to feel completely empty, sit there. Embrace the emptiness of your form. Breathe in the emptiness of the Universe.

From the emptiness and nothingness allow the idea that the body is made up of atoms which are the remnants of star explosions from the formation of galaxies.

Contemplate the inter-connectedness of being.

Breathe and bring the “Self” back into Nothingness.

After a few minutes invite the idea of the Perfect Day Scenario into this space of “Empty Nothingness.”

Feel what it feels like to Be. Look through the eyes of the person You wish to become. See the actions that person takes on a daily basis. Watch all that unfolds.

Connect with the highest of Potentials.

Now Return to Nothingness.

Let go of even that idealization of who you are to become.

Just Be.

Breathe here, empty for just a few seconds. Envision that Black Hole as it pulls your idealization and delivering it to the core of the Universe.

Embrace the space of nothingness again.

Breathe and fill that empty void with Love and Joy.

Breathe in and arrive. Here. Now.

Breathe out and Be home. Here. Now.

You already are that which you wish to be. The only difference is in the actions that you take.

Ask yourself “What can I do today?”

Breathe. Arrive.

Ask yourself “What Can I NOT do Today?”

Breathe. Be at Home.

Allow your true self to rise from the empty void of nothingness from which it came.

Let go of “Yourself”. Breathe. Be.

Here is an MP3 to help you with this exercise.

Take a few moments to reflect.

Then do these 2 things.

Thank you for your very open and honest response Lori.

I identify with “that lazy piece of shit” FOR SURE! You’re not alone there.

Although I do seem to create quite a bit each week, I have such high expectations of myself that I sometimes really key in on all the “things I didn’t do, could have done or should have done.” I forget to notice sometimes the ways I did show up today; a smile, a hug, an email to a friend.

Take a breath…or two. Remind yourself you’re not broken…YOU ARE ALREADY TOGETHER.

You do know that Laundry can become a practice of stillness don’t you??

1-”What did you realize when you embraced nothingness today?” I realize that I am a lazy piece of shit lately! I am not who I CAN be! 2-”Share with us your dream of who you want to become.” I WANT to become the best ME I can be! I will get organized and get there again. With sadness for myself & guilt bcuz I want to give you the feedback you request, if I am being honest with us both, I have to say that I feel rushed to even type this comment. How ridiculous is that?! I’ve got laundry to do. Taking time to better myself is difficult for me bcuz my inner voice tells me that I am being selfish and taking away time/energy that I should be focusing on doing ‘something/anything’ for my home and my children. I WANT to have it all together…and I just don’t. Yet. But I have hope. Thank you Tim! <3
